What material is chiffon?

The technical name for "chiffon" is "georgette." Georgette, also known as georgette crepe, is a type of silk fabric woven with strongly twisted warp and weft threads. The term "georgette" originates from England. The warp and weft threads are made of tightly twisted yarns with two different twist directions—S-twist and Z-twist—arranged alternately in a ZS or 2Z pattern, interwoven in a plain weave structure. As a result, the fabric has a very low warp and weft density. After the raw silk fabric undergoes refining, the untwisting effect of the silk threads causes it to shrink and develop a crinkled texture, giving rise to georgette—a fabric characterized by evenly distributed, loosely structured wrinkles on its surface.
Depending on the raw materials used, georgette fabrics can be categorized into several types, including pure silk georgette, rayon georgette, polyester georgette, and blended georgette. If only one twist direction is employed for the weft yarns, the resulting georgette fabric is referred to as "single-direction-fiber georgette." This type of georgette exhibits irregular wrinkles with raised and recessed pleats running in the warp direction, and its production cost is lower than that of yarn-dyed fabrics.
Georgette fabric is lightweight and sheer, with a soft, smooth, and elastic hand feel. It has a delicate, elegant, and refined appearance, as well as excellent breathability and drape. When worn, it creates a flowing, comfortable sensation. The lightness, weight, thickness, thinness, transparency, and crepe-like texture of georgette largely depend on the fineness of the silk threads, the number of threads twisted together, the twist level, and the warp and weft densities.
Georgette is ideal for making women’s dresses, high-end evening gowns, headscarves, palace lantern crafts, and more. It is a spun-fabric product within the silk family—lightweight, sheer, soft, and flowing. The name is a phonetic transliteration of the French word CHIFFE, which means a light and transparent fabric.
